Learning the ropes
I have a friend that I had a phone conversation with last night who is in sales. We are in different businesses, though marketing in the service business is the same; get your name out there and explain why you're the one to go to for the best service.
My question was how to get the in when the other guy out bid you. The explaination was again, get your name out there and consistantly be on the ball repeatedly, letting persective clients know that you're the one to go to for the best service. If the other guy is cutting corners they might drop the ball soon enough. If you are on the mind of the perspective clients you'll get the call and the chance to prove yourself.
Put together your promotional material explaining your policies and of course why you're the best!

Let me introduce myself
Helllo I'm Tim Klix A.K.A "Little Timmy Trucker". I was born, December 5th, 1969 to Sharon Sabatino and David Klix in Daytona Beach, Fl.
At that time mom was 18 and a waitress at a restaurant, pop was a 24 year old taxi driver. Pop moved on to being a trucker like his stepfather and ma worked at Eckard drug store. By the time I was seven ma and pop had split, pop kept on trucking and is still jammin' gears to this day.
Ma moved up through the ranks at Eckard all the way to manager. Moved on to banking.Worked at Sallie Mae for a while until they wanted to move her to somewhere she didn't want to go. Now she has moved her way through the ranks at Loudon County Schools transportation department and is the lead driver in South Riding.
Myself, I'm a beach baby, I love the beach, I can't get enough of a tropical paradice.I will end up living close to the beach eventually.
As far as my profession, I tell people I've been driving trucks since I could push it accross the livingroom floor. Every Christmas until I was seven, I would get a new truck under the tree. I could tell you what type of truck we were coming up on before you could see the name plate.
When pop would come home from the road I'd meet him at the truck and before he could get out, I'd climb up the side of his cabover and into his lap to welcome him home. I was no taller than the wheel at that time. I would never pass up the chance to go with him on the road. He tells a story about the time he took me to Miami with him, he asked if I wanted to go to Miami with him and I asked, "Your Ami???" he always gets a chuckle out of that one.
Ma drove the big rigs too! Pop took her cross country and on the way, put her behind the wheel of a Pete 362. After they split and while we lived in Houston she teamed with a friend and hauled coffee for C.F.S. continental until we moved to California to be Navy folk with the man she met in Texas.
San Diego was a blast! I went to Roosevelt Middle School, right nextdoor to the World Famous San Diego Zoo. I spent my days skateboarding, riding my bicycle and learning to play the Bass Guitar.
At first I wanted to play drums but ma wasn't having that. The guy Ma had met in Texas was and still is a guitarist. I was hanging out while his band was jamming and when they took a break he hung a Les Paul over my shoulder and told me to hold on to it until he came back. One strum and I was hooked! He introduced me to the music of the band KISS. Gene Simmons was the coolest THING I had ever seen! I was told he played the Bass Guitar and that is where my passion for the Bass began.
As a kid I did my thing as an artist too, I'm fairly good with a pencil and ink. I could use a bit of practice with paints. I guess being born on Disney's birthday I would just have that talent too. I don't know I just do.
I moved around a bit as a kid with Ma; Florida, Texas, California, Washington State, Northern Virginia, back to California, then back to Northern Virginia. during that time I spent alot of time doing art and playing Bass. By the time I was 18 I was in a Psycadelic band called "Chapel Perilous", a three piece group that played all original tunes developed by the front man, who would like me keep him anonymous. We still keep in contact and the group is still alive if we want to do anything with it. I also collaborated with some highschool friends to create the Northern Virginia Original "Alternative Metal" group, "Vast Minority". We created two albums/C.D.s, you can see some of our music on Youtube. That group disbanded in 1995 and at that time, frustrated and depressed, I went on into trucking.
I worked for a local moving company, got my class B license and studied about the trucking industry.
I worked there for a few years then moved on to heavier trucks eventually obtaining my class A.
This all came pretty easy for me 'cause remember, I've been driving since I could push my truck accross the livingroom floor, hauling cangoods from the kitchen cabinet to the end table and back right...?
After a while of trailer trucking; flatbeds, dumps, vans and reefers, I went out on my own. Got my own authority and learning all the way. Unfortunatley part of learning to succeed ,you fail sometimes. In the first year and a half I found out that a one truck operation is not a hot commodity in the trucking industry. Brokers are in it for themselves, fuel prices can really put a wrench in the works, and when people don't buy things there isn't much to haul.
I have been working as a driver the past 3 years with owner operators and small companies and all the time taking in everything I can so I can learn more about how to make it work for me.
I still own a tractor-trailer but haven't had it on the road in these 3 years. Eventually I will get it together and have my truck working again.
Here I am now in Fredericksburg, VA waiting to be assigned a truck from Taylor Transportation, the forth company in the three years I've been working with other peoples equipment.
Follow along if you wish as I learn how to use this Blog to help myself and others advance in life as a trucker and a bassist.
Enjoy
